THE ROMANTIC OFFICE SAGA: PART 130

THE ROMANTIC OFFICE SAGA: PART 130

“Stella, just tell me why you are late! Stop beating about the bush.” Irene shouted to Stella. She had come to work at almost 10 am, which was late by all our company standards. Stella just got stammering unable to face Irene who was talking in a harsh tone to her. I just got into Irene’s office without knocking.
“Kindly you two ladies tell me what is the point of disagreement.” I told them without greeting them. They looked at me.
“Stella came to work late, she does not bother telling me what made her come late.” Irene said. That sounded highly unlikely since Stella was talking but Irene was not listening at all she kept talking too and it was apparent that the case would never end.
“Stella, meet me in my office right now, go and wait for me there.” I told Stella and she left silently.
“Irene, that is no proper way of handling a staff, why are you shouting to her instead of listening to her point of view?” I told Irene. She looked at me and funny enough, smiled.
“Tony, I am just doing my job.” Irene said with a charming smile.
I did not smile back.
“Yes, but be a little diplomatic, you never know. When you maintain your calm talking to someone, it disarms that person. But when you talk tough, that person becomes defensive and might even lie to you. Now, can you let me handle it for you?” I requested Irene.
After looking at me for a few seconds she said, “All right, ok. Give me feedback once done.”
I left her and went to my office where I met Stella seated silently waiting for me.
“Stella, why did you come to work this late? It is unusual of you, you know.” I told her smiling at her. She sounded hesitant when giving me her reply.
“Tony, can I tell you the truth? And please do not use the truth against me.” Stella told me.
“All right, it is between me and you.” I told her, reassuring her.
She inhaled for a while, fidgeted on her seat and said, “I operate a clothes stall downtown, so this morning, my worker didn’t open and since it is a whole sale business sort of, clients got really mad and began calling me since their deliveries were being delayed. So, instead of losing all those customers to my competitors I simply went to diffuse the crisis as I called a cousin to come and hold for me the stall in the meantime. I am really sorry for all this, I had no choice.” Stella told me.
I remained silent for a while.
“I get you, but you should have communicated at least, in this world we do various businesses but we do not let them conflict with our work. It is against our company policy to have a work that is conflicting with your work here. So, let this be the last time. And if anything, make sure to call or text.” I told Stella. She looked at me puzzled.
“But, I called Sally and told her!” Stella said. That sounded strange.
“When did you call?” I asked her.
“In the morning.” Stella answered.
That sounded strange indeed.
“Which number did you call?” I asked her.
She read out the number from her handset. It was not Sally’s number in fact I did not know whose number that was.
“Sorry, that is not her number, you called the wrong person.” I told Stella.
“How? I picked this number from employee’s records!” Stella said.
“Which records?” I asked her.
“From her file, in HR’s office!” Stella said and that continued to puzzle me even more.
“Ok, I will have to confirm that.” I told her and dialed HR’s office. Irene picked it.
“Irene, please bring for me Sally’s file.” I told her and hung up. Irene did just that and within no time Sally’s file was with me. I crosschecked the file and true to her word, the number on her file was wrong and I had no idea how it got there.
“Irene, you are the one who maintains employees’ files. Can you explain to me how comes Sally’s number is wrong on her file?” I asked from Irene. She looked puzzled.
“That is the number that has always been there. However, I know Sally’s other number so I have always thought this one belongs to her too.” Irene told me.
It was an exercise of futility trying to figure out the whole puzzle so I just told Irene to update Sally’s file and dismissed both of them from my office. I went to Sally’s office and explained to her the whole saga, she too did not know how that wrong number got on her file but she was glad I handled it.
“But that makes me want to know if all employee’s files are updated, so I will talk with Irene and tell her to do so, what of the electronic records in the computer are they updated? I guess I will involve the IT department too. But this issue of people having side jobs, even though am not against it, I would wish to address it so that people do not put their personal interests before the work.” Sally told me.
“We have a meeting in the afternoon, maybe we can use that chance to talk about it.” I told Sally and she was ok with the idea.
“All right, we will.” Sally told me. I stood up and left her office.
On my way to my office I met Cynthia.
“Good morning, sir.” She greeted me formally.
“Good morning, Cynthia. Kindly, I would prefer you call me by my names, I just dislike titles.” I told her. She smiled and greeted me again, “Good morning, Tony.”
I smiled back, “Good morning, Cynthia.”
“Happy now?” Cynthia asked smiling.
“Oh! Yes, happy now. Have a good day.” I told her.
“You too. Thank you.” She told me, walked past me and went along swinging her hips side to side as if deliberately. I noticed she had added some weight and her hips were protruding a little more. That with her height made her look womanlier.
======
During lunch, I met Collins, Chris and Carol already having their lunch having a heated conversation. They were however talking about the reasons as to why there is a rise in domestic violence. Casual talk that was joined by more people during lunch hour with everyone giving their views.
“Only cowards beat their wives.” Chris said.
Collins looked at him and said, “Young man, some women are so evil she can provoke you until you feel like crashing her stupid head with a sledge hammer.” Collins said. Everyone looked at him.
“Collins, would you beat up your wife?” Maureen asked him.
“I have never seen a reason to beat my wife, but I have seen some people who do that and some of these women deserve a beating. They provoke a man, insult him and label him a coward if the man does not slap her, so such in my opinion are worth a beating.” Collins said.
“I would hate to be married to a man who beats me.” Cynthia said.
“Then, I would urge you to avoid anything that would make you get beaten.” I told her.
“Do you advocate for beating?” Loveynna asked me.
“No, I have never supported violence at all. But where diplomacy fails, apply brutality.” I said.
“You sound philosophical. Would you mind telling us why you would beat a woman if you ever had to?” Stella asked me.
“Like if a woman is physically violent, I would surely beat you up. But insults won’t make me beat you, I will just move away from you.” I told them.
Chris looked at me for a while. “Tony, some women can really drive you over the wall. She will push you with insults, ridicule you until you simply blow up and find yourself giving her a beating.”
“Come on! Can’t you just leave her alone and walk away?” Carol asked Collins with a serious tone.
“Hell no. I will discipline you.” Chris said.
“You honestly don’t look like someone who can beat someone.” Irene told Chris.
We remained silent for a while since we did not really know what was the intention of that statement.
“How do people who can beat up others look like?” Chris asked sounded agitated.
Irene looked at him. “I mean, look at yourself, you are even getting fat. Am sure you do not even work out. Do you even have the strength to sustain a fight?”
“I don’t care what you see in me, I know myself.” Chris said.
I realized Luke was not with us.
“By the way, where is St. Luke?” I asked, no one in particular. People looked around.
“Probably out there preaching.” Letisha answered more of a joke.
“I am serious, where is he?” I asked.
Carol reached for her phone to call him but the call went unanswered.
We did not bother about him since we assumed probably he got an urgent task to go to town.
=======
When we got to our meeting, Sally introduced the issue of people having side hustles without interfering with their jobs. People really felt so free and opened up.
“Like, my side hustle is writing articles, research articles for people.” Maureen said.
“When do you do it?” Sally asked her.
“In the evening, I just power on my laptop at home, write up to 11 pm and go to sleep.” She was open and frank.
“I am a beautician in my neighborhood.” Cynthia said. She really sounded like one when she explained what she does.
“Letisha, what do you do on the side? I noticed of late you are so smart like you run a big business.” Sally suddenly asked Letisha.
Letisha gave us a mischievous smile.
“No one should judge me, but since you want to know, I will just let you know. I am a call girl at night.” Letisha said and folded herself on her chair.
Everybody looked surprised.
She smiled and said,” Come on you people. Isn’t it a job like the rest? I mean, if I can use what mother nature gave me to earn some more, why not such a job?”
“Oh! We are ok, I even wonder why people look surprised.” Sally said smiling trying to diffuse the moment but honestly everyone was shocked.
“How much do you make in a night?” Collins asked. He laughed at the end.
“Hmmmm, on a good night, I do make even Kshs 40,000. More so from these rich clients, but I do not do it daily, sometimes I just do it twice per week and I am done so cumulatively I might get around Kshs 250,000 per month with my side hustle. I want to graduate to a socialite soon that is why I am working out to be shapelier and attract more rich guys. I have also signed up to a night girls company where we get to meet rich Nigerian men who want some fun and they pay more.” Letisha was so forthright with it as if she was expounding on a sermon.
“Do you enjoy it? I mean the sex?” Collins pressed further.
“Collins! Damn you are going into too much details!” Cynthia said.
“No, I am ready to give details, I mean, if you also wish to join me I can introduce you to the club.” Letisha told Cynthia.
She then looked at Collins and said, “Yes, our work is not like how prostitutes work. We have our dignity. We meet clients we are comfortable with. So, before we have some fun, I must like you too. Like we make a booking, you meet the client some days before, get to know each other, get more at ease with him then we arrange when to meet officially for the task. We even go for HIV test, and other STD tests so it is not like we gonna get a disease there, we go there when we are clean and come out clean. So, yes, we enjoy and even get orgasms!” Letisha said.
At this point, we all wanted to aske her questions. I knew how call girls operate but had never met one in real life.
“So, you people are trained on how to give a man fun?” Cynthia asked.
“Oh! yes, we undergo training to know how to please a man. How not to be shy, how to do strip tease dancing, pole dancing, etc. Our aim is to make the client as happy as possible. Besides, in our club, all ladies there must be intelligent too since at times before going into the actual sex, may be the person wants some nice company so we go to a restaurant within our premises, have conversations, talk about world affairs, current affairs etc. So, you must be intellectually at par with them. The more well informed you are, the higher the chances for you hitting a high-profile client who will pay more. Most girls there have education, have class, are sophisticated somehow, we are trained how to talk, how to dress nicely, how to behave for certain occasions etc. Some of us are called “female escorts” a foreigner wants a female company to tour around in weekends may be to Masai Mara or any exotic destination. So, if you are dumb how will you give this man a nice company that he will enjoy? So, we all must be intelligent somehow.” Letisha said.
Sally looked at her keenly, I really wondered what was in her mind. In my mind, I knew Letisha was a crazy lady but I had never thought of her to be such crazy and daring.
“Look, Cynthia, if you wish to join such a club, you really must have a work too. No desperation is encouraged there. We go as if we are going for a business meeting in the evenings perhaps, we even get to talk about international business but deep down we also know we are there to please those men. Unlike prostitutes who endanger their lives standing at night waiting for drunkards, some of us we even meet high profile clients like pastors, professors even politicians. If your husband tells you he is coming from a business meeting at midnight and he is a high-profile business, comes smelling fresh, but he is tired don’t want to fuck you that night, probably he is from one of us. We make sure to give these men sex of a lifetime until they never forget us. As long as you do not fall in love with your client, you are good to go.” Letisha told Cynthia who seemed so interested in that business.
“Damn! This is Crazy!” Collins said.
Letisha continued, “If you are a man, you also do not just come there seeking for a woman. There are procedures to follow, you get introduced to the club may be by old male members, you come and deposit some money with the club. That is a surety or membership fee. You get tested all diseases and if any is found on you, you are not granted membership. Same with girls you deposit some amount depending on your level of membership. Don’t ask me how much I deposited.” Letisha said with a charming smile.
“I want to be a member.” Collins said. Everyone looked at him and laughed.
“All right, Letisha, thank you for the details.” Sally told her, wanting the rest to continue talking about themselves.
“Madam, you can also join us.” Letisha told Sally jokingly.
“The deal sounds lucrative but no. I cannot bring myself to use my body to earn money, I would honestly feel so degraded. I wish you well in your work, but thank you for your offer and details.” Sally told Letisha calmly. Letisha just nodded in agreement.
But even after everyone explained their side hustles, it was obvious Letisha completely stole the show such that even after the meeting ended, everyone was still interested in knowing further details of her type of work. I would have wanted to sit with them to continue listening to her since it was already past 5 pm beyond work time, but I realized Sally looking at me and I knew she was not comfortable with me remaining behind there for a while, so I just stood up, bid them goodbye and went along with Sally.
“I have always suspected Letisha to be a call girl, today she just confirmed.” Sally told me when we got on our car to go home.
“Why did you suspect?” I asked her. She smiled.
“Just how she behaves.” Sally told me. I did not press further for details. But I really felt like I should know more of the details.
“Did you send Luke to town in the afternoon?” I asked Sally.
“No, I thought you sent him. He was not in the meeting.” Sally said.
“His number is not going through.” I told Sally after I tried calling him.
“Well, he shall show up tomorrow if he is still around. Perhaps he also went to look at his side job and forgot to come.” Sally said jokingly. I drove along slowly towards our home, trying to avoid the routes with heavy traffic.
I however was not comfortable without knowing where Luke was.
=======
We got home and all I did was relax for a while before moving on to assist Sally with some home chores.
“Do you know? Sometimes I feel odd seeing you helping me with domestic jobs.” Sally told me.
“Why? I just do them. After all, before we got married I was cooking, washing, cleaning, etc.” I told Sally.
“Yes, but now I am married to you sometimes I feel like I should be the one doing all those stuffs.” Sally said.
“Well, I cannot leave you get more tired. After all, we both work so when home we both are tired so why not just help each other with some work at least?” I told Sally.
She looked at me. We were in the kitchen together. Agatha who was with the child at the table room was feeding the baby. She crossed the gap suddenly and planted a soft kiss on my cheeks.
“This is why I love you, you really make me feel nice being with you.” Sally told me. I gave her a light hug and went on cutting some onions. I was making some Kachumbari after sending Agatha some nyamachoma. That evening, I just wanted to eat some nyamachoma.
======
The following morning at work, still no one knew where Luke was so I called Carol to ask her.
“Carol, where is Luke?” I was direct to the question.
“I also don’t know, I went to his place and he was not there. Neighbors do not know where he is too!” Carol said, she sounded worried.
“This is not funny at all. Who leaves just like that without trace?” I asked Carol.
“I don’t know what came over him.” Carol said. As we were talking, Cynthia knocked at the door.
“Some men are here, they want to see Carol.” Cynthia said.
Carol followed Cynthia, but I felt the urge to also follow.
I was surprised to see they were policemen.
“Are you Carol?” They asked.
“Yes, anything the matter?” Carol asked.
“You are coming with us to the police station. You have some questions to answer and you need to record a statement with us.” The policeman told Carol. Carol was so shocked she just stood there unable to talk.
“Does she need to come with you right away?” I asked the one who seemed in charge.
“Yes. Right away. It is about a missing person who was last seen with her.” The man said.
The missing person was none other than Luke.
“All right, just go with them, once done, just come back.” I told Carol.
Letisha stood by just watching not saying anything. She too was surprised and I could read some pity in her eyes.
After Carol was gone with the men, Letisha approached me.
“Is it about Luke?” She asked me.
“I think so. I hope all is well. Could you perhaps be knowing anything about it?” I asked her.
She looked around as if to make sure no one else was listening.
“Luke has always been a strange man. But I hope it all ends well.” Letisha said. Before she could talk further, Sally came out and motioned me to go to her office.
“Now that Luke is not around, can we give Letisha this money to go and deposit?” Sally asked showing me some cash on her drawer amounting to almost Kshs 200,000.
“That would be ok, we have no choice.” I told Sally.
“But I am not comfortable giving it to go alone with it. I used to trust Luke but not her. I mean, she is a woman and she could get mugged.” Sally said.
I observed Sally’s mood to know whether she would be comfortable me driving Letisha to the bank and back. Before I even made that suggestion, Sally said, “Do you mind driving her to the bank and back? This money is too much to give her to walk alone, I do not even trust a cab for her.”
“All right, I will take her.” I said. Sally smiled, looked at me keenly and said, “Please come back immediately, I also don’t trust Letisha with you too.” Sally said more of like a joke but I knew her joke was serious.
She called Letisha to her office, explained to her about the money and gave her instructions on how to deposit it.
“All right, Madam. I will do it.” Letisha answered Sally with respect.
We headed straight for my car. I got inside, locked the doors, put on some music and air conditioner and reversed slowly.
“You drive so calmly, I like it.” Letisha said. I just smiled, drove slowly and once outside the gate, I hit the gas and accelerated towards the bank.
“Please buckle up your seat belt to silence that alarm.” I told Letisha.
She got hold of the belt and as she was passing it on her bosom, she pulled her boobs apart gently so that the belt would pass properly by her breasts. I just concentrated on the road.
